In September 2015, developer Everett Custom Homes sought to cut these giant sequoias down to make room for one large house. The local community took a stand though, asking if this really was the best way to develop our city. No one in the neighborhood wanted the trees destroyed, especially if there was an alternative. Citizens from all over the Portland and beyond joined the struggle, defying arrest to protect the trees from chainsaw crews on two occasions. Finally, a solution was brokered. That solution is called Save the Giants Park . It’s our hope that it will serve as a monument to a time when people cared enough to affect change. In creating this public space, we seek to share |
